ASA DOGS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Welcome to Australian Shepherd Advocates (ASA)! Enjoy scrolling through to see all the ASA Dogs currently available for adoption. Our main mission is to rescue herding breed dogs- including, of course, Aussies, but also Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes. (Occasionally, you will find dogs of other breeds in need, brought to us by ASA Team Members.)
Every ASA dog comes fully vetted according to veterinarian protocol for their age. Our adoption fee is $275-$325 unless otherwise stated for a specific dog. You can read about the dogs available for adoption here. ASA takes great care in describing the personality, temperament and needs of every dog. If you are interested in being considered as a possible adopter for one of our dogs, please fill out and submit an adoption application under "Adopting an ASA Dog" in the menu. Volunteer or paid transporters are usually available to help our dogs travel to their Forever home, depending on the dogs needs and their distance from the approved chosen adopter.

RANGER

Picture
Ranger, our Diamond in the Ruff! Ranger, an approximately 3-year-old, 65-pound-ish, red tricolor bobbin tail big-hearted Aussie mix. His last people didn't give him loving guidance and boundaries-and it shows. Ranger's our Diamond in the Ruff looking for a person to polish his rough and untaught edges and bring out his shiny best.

Diamond Ranger:
Ranger's an "all about my Person" boy who needs an "all about my dog" Person. He's Aussie smart, Aussie social, and Aussie enthusiastic. Ranger LOVES being with his Person. Foster Mom says Ranger is very velcro and craves his attention. If he could the pooch philophile would spend 24/7 as his Person's sidekick and follow them to the ends of the earth. The boy's rather passionate and... persistent about the Person-pup connection. Lol.
Ranger is big on butt scratches. So much so, the fella will do a tush push to "butt in" on another dog's time.
He does enjoy playtime with the Foster canine siblings, even sharing his bones. Doggo-a-doggo tug of war is a favorite game.
The boy does well with the kitties. Occasionally Ranger gets it into his head to start an impromptu game of chase. Just remind him that is a no.
Ranger does fine in his crate, though he will howl a protest or two. He has been left alone in the kitchen while Foster Mom ran errands. His Forever Family will want to give him lots of time and further training before leaving him to roam alone.
While Ranger's pretty moderate on the energy scale, he has a lively, joy-filled spirit.

Ruff Ranger
:
Since Ranger wasn't given the consistent training, social interaction, and enrichment Aussies require he sorta became an Overgrown Puppy.
Ranger has separation anxiety. He's not destructive or aggressive. When Ranger thinks he knows best, the puppster can be vocal in his protests about not getting his way. Over time, Ranger has begun to respond to the consistent and clear limits Foster Mom has set.
His liveliness has manifested in some unwelcome antics-shooting out of his crate to celebrate being reunited (he tends to exaggerate), being too rowdy with other dogs when he's overexcited, and eagerly hurling himself at his Person. The big lug's getting the idea that whinin' don't work. Redirection, and treats have helped too. Puzzles, sniff games, and licky mats are great tools. The main takeaway for Ranger is learning that boundaries are good and lead to good things.
Our late bloomer is still in the process of potty training-he came to his Foster home not knowing much about bathroom etiquette-outside only Dude. Foster Mom lets the fella out regularly and says it has gotten better, but Ranger's folks must be willing to continue working with him.
He isn't a fan of touch management and will wiggle and waggle and fuss-grooming isn't something Ranger likes much. However, desensitization(exposing him to routine touch and direction)and helping him manage his reactions is working. For one thing, he's become a pretty good boy about getting his paws wiped.
Ranger's a big drinker-access to water is important to an anxious boy. His family will want to work with providing it in line with potty routine.

Forever Ranger:
Ranger has benefitted greatly from consistent boundaries. Ranger's family will be "all in". They will be confident and loving dog managers, know Aussies, and truly desire to see Ranger realize his full potential as a contented canine companion. Since he is quite responsive to his environment, a calm quiet home is ideal for Ranger. A dog who has come from very little guidance to loving leadership needs time to adjust and become a family member. Foster Mom says the first week or two were an especially big decompression time for our fella. Intentional training, planned socialization, and enrichment interaction to build trust and security are the key to Ranger's becoming his best boy self. Another well-trained dog may be ok if family monitors appropriate play. Felines are fine. However, he certainly would Adore being the Lone Ranger for his Family to love on and focus on. A fence is not necessarily necessary. Dog-savvy kiddos 13 and up who can be a part of training Ranger would be welcome.
Ranger deserves his Forever chance.
Note: Multiresidential buildings(such as apartments) and dog parks are not a good fit for this boy. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. Ranger raves, "My Person is my Passion! Will you take me under your wing?" Is Diamond Ranger your Best Friend? Fill out an application at the link below to be considered as a possible adopter. (Only COMPLETELY answered applications considered.) https://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/dDNce9yr0ChU0F -Fostered in PA. Fee: $325 *Read the bio carefully. Priority is given to the pup's needs in choosing the adopter to ensure a Happy Forever. Transport help usually available subject to dog's best interest.

SKY

Picture
Happy Guy Sky! Imagine being greeted everyday by Sky's sweet, "it's a treat to meet you" darling doggy grin! Sky boy's an Aussie mix-approximately 8 month old, 45 pounds. This guy is a delightful dance mixtape of energy, goofiness, and just a 'happy, happy, happy dog...happy guy'. Sweet Sky's as open and big hearted as you'd expect the boy with that winsome grin to be. Sky was saved from a near miss tragic end by an advocate taken with his big loveable, goofy, trusting puppy heart
What was Sky's transgression that nearly earned him an end sentence? Sky's deaf. He was "returned" to the shelter by a family who didn't understand a deaf dog-toddler dynamic. Deaf doggos are going to be startled by a quick moving tyke they can't see coming. So we will find this plucky pup with the indomitable grin the perfect place. Sky is a happy heart who adores pretty much everyone and everything! People? Yep! Food? Yes, please! Car rides? Let's go! Toys (squeaky, too)? 100%! Balls? Of course, fetch is super-duper funtastic! Walkies? Playing outside in the dirt? Other dogs? Yes, yes, YES! Everyone is a buddy waiting to be met. Everything is a joy to be discovered...or uncovered. Oh wait-EXCEPT baths! Sky is NOT fond of those. Foster Mom uses a licky mat to distract treat motivated Sky when he is forced to endure a pesky bath. Like most puppies, Sky is learning what is appropriate to chew on. Just give the energetic, spirited fun guy lots of toys to play with and Aussie style things to do. Our fluffy fella is friendly with the Foster feline. His people will want to monitor the furballs at first- since Sky likes to play and can't hear feline warnings: "Back off Pooch.". Foster Mom uses a soft leader for walks. He's also a good boy in the crate when she works a few hours. Sky knows his house manners. Any pup in a new home will need time to adjust. Sky is Aussie smart. He responds to signs for "come" and "sit" and learning "down" and "wait". Those treats are a great training tool to help a responsive laddie focus. Actually, stinker Sky thinks "anytime", is always a good time to eat. (Slow feeder is a must for this eager eater.) Sky learns fast! He comes in at night when Foster Mom flashes the light off and on. Sky has some typical deafie anxiety from lack o-can bark at shadows, or be startled by things he doesn't expect. A soft tap on Sky's head is the best way to wake him. Sky is eager for activities to help him focus mental and physical energy, guidance to build confidence and one on one time to give his hopeful nature and high-spiritedness. Being with his People is really Sky's happy place and firm foundation. If he awakes from a nap and doesn't see them, Sky will search, calling out until they are reunited. He's a big hearted, big brained, bit bumbly, bubbly boy looking for his Forever Happy Place. Sky would be a match for herding breed experienced on the move, going-and-doing Folks. Deaf dog knowledge is also helpful. Mental and physical enrichment are essential for Sky lad. Since Sky's an enthusiastic baby, and tumble playful, he'd probably be a better companion for dog-smart kiddos 9 and up. Sky would enjoy having another similar breed buddy (or two!) with an easygoing temperament he can learn all the doggy stuff from. Felines are fine, as long as they're dog savvy. Sky would likely need a fenced in area-exceptions might be made for folks who have lots of experience and continually monitor their dogs. Training is a commitment every dog lover makes and it is especially important for a herding breed, exuberant, deaf puppy. It isn't necessarily harder to teach a hearing impaired pup, but it requires consistency, patience with yourself, and your pooch. The reward-well. Sky's the limit! Multiresidential buildings (such as apartments) are not a good fit for this boy. The best adopters give their new family member time to decompress and grow familiar with a new environment and routine. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. If you are ready to experience ALL that comes with a puppy, please apply. Sky bounded up to say, 'Heya hi there! Let's have a contest- who can make the other the most happy? Betcha I'll win!' Ready for unlimited happiness with Sky? BENJI

Picture
Benji, Lifelong Best Friend. The beautiful red tri color has a heart for his Special Person that makes him a perfect buddy sidekick. Benji is an approximately 3 year old Australian Shepherd mix with bright heart eyes and a bouncy bob tail. The boy is smart, athletic, responsive and affectionate. Foster Mom says he's an Aussie blend of snuggle buddy (Benji never left her side when she was recently ill and offered oodles of cuddle comfort) and energetic fluffbuff (He is naturally exuberant and agile). Benji just delights in being a Best Friend.
🤗 The fun boy also has a toy...well, joy. He's never met a toy he didn’t love. Benji has been seen romping around the yard with a delighted grin on his face and a favorite toy in his mouth. Life is grand!
The boy's backstory is not unusual. His last folks weren't able to offer him the time and level of engagement and activity Benji needed. Benji deserves Forever with a Best Friend who appreciates the Aussie breed temperament-active, intelligent, inquisitive, a part of and interacting with the family. Benji's spunky spirit and spirited sprint make him a possible candidate for doggy sports or agility-flyball, trick training, lure coursing, disc dog. Maybe some backyard agility fun. Remember Benji's toy zeal; teach him to identify them and seek and find. With training, buddy boy may make a nice running or hiking partner. This canine connects with his Bestie's energy and responds to his environment. Focused training and intentional bonding will make Benji a Lifelong Best Friend. After frolics, Benj settles in for quiet companionship. What else about our darling boy? He has very good house manners and in his crate. At his Foster home, Benji is gentle with the senior canines, including smaller dogs, and fine with the felines. Benji's a canine in training in some things. His hop-up hellos and on leash need work. The boy's love to run mean he's likely to chase after outdoor cats and critters. Since Benji claims dibs on toys, he doesn't share well.
What does this bright guy seek in his Forever Abode? Since Benji is so attune to his Person, and environment, he will be a perfect match for the confident, calm, experienced family who love Aussies or herding/working dog breeds and live an active lifestyle and make their dog a part of it. They will train Benji and offer him opportunities to live his best life. They'll get a doting companion, fun buddy and lifetime loyal sidekick in return. Benji probably needs a fence, though an experienced adopter might not need one. Since he greets with two paws on the floor and two on you, we think dog savvy kiddos around 8 and up would appreciate Benji best. Dogs that are calm, confident, and socialized would be nice for him. Indoor cats are ok.
Dog parks aren't really for this boy. Multi-residential buildings (such as apartments) are not a good fit. The best adopters give their new family member time to decompress and grow familiar with the new environment and routine. They invest time to understand their dog and build a bond of trust with guidance and training. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. Benji hops by to say, 'Yipee! You n' me, Best Friend...let's do this Forever thing. Race ya to the toy bin!' Are you and Benji meant to be BFFS? Fill out an application at the link below to be considered as a possible adopter. DEXTER

Picture
Our boy Dexter is reserved for the Aussie fan! The savvy aficionado scanning adoption sites for an athletic, intelligent, eager-to-please, cuddle-loving fluffbuff. Dex-approximately 2 year old, 50-pound, red merle, bobtailed, heart eyes Australian Shepherd mix doggo with 'let's do it!' energy and enthusiasm seeking his 'let's go boy!' home. The affectionate and attentive athlete is eager to please his Person. In fact, Foster Mom says Dex's big heart craves being his Person's sidekick for active adventure and the recipient of all their cuddles and kisses. She can see him easily participating with Coach Bestie in agility or lure chase (Fast CAT-100 yard course dash). Dexter came to ASA from a family who didn't have time or energy to give a high octane young herder. This no doubt helped create a little bit of anxiety in the bright boy. Dexter's Aussie pupsona needs mental and physical enrichment time with his Favorite. Structured activities and/or classes will help Dex and Bestie to bond while directing his energy and any anxiety. Dexter does ok in his crate, with a protest or two but soon settles in. Dex's enthusiasm carries over into his love leaps and greets. The happy herder and Foster Mom are working on proper hellos. Dex also having fun learning to "sit" and "down" for treat rewards and wait until he's called. He's also training on leash and to stay for the sign to enter and exit his crate. Cool canine companion-he loves to go on outings too-in the car or on walks. Dexter is Aussie awesome-energetic, smart, responsive, sweet. He deserves a herding/working dog experienced BFF who wants a boy to keep by their side, work with, and invest time, training and love in. Dex is going to be a perfect partner for the active adventure seeker and someone interested in dog sports. Truly, Dexter will thrive under the loving lead of his handler. Since the dynamic dude loves to race and romp with his Foster pooch playfellows (of different sizes), he'd love a family with a pooch pal or two. An enclosed fence is preferable, though it may not be necessary for the right home. Since Dexter's jump up welcomes are still a work in progress, dog savvy kiddos 8 and up would enjoy him most. Multiresidential buildings (such as apartments) are not a good fit for this boy. The best adopters give their new family member time to decompress and grow familiar with a new environment and routine. They see the importance of investing time to understand their dog and build a bond of trust and provide steady, reasonable guidance and training. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. Dexter added personally, 'Heya Forever! I'm ready to do this 'you n' me'. Let's not waste any more time!' Are you all-in, BFF bond for this Aussie Awesome? Fill out an application for Dexter at the link below to be considered as a possible adopter. HUNTER

Picture
Cuz he's got per-so-nality! Little Man Hunter is a precious package of charming pupsonality-smart, happy, loving. He's an approximately 7 month, 20 pound double merle deafie, Aussie/Corgi mix. Chronically cute, incurably contented, and classically cuddly-this little guy has many talents. Hunter lightens a lousy day and warms a chilly night. The quintessential lap dog-lots of sweet snuggles. Super smart with a superb sniffer-Hunter loves puzzles and snuffle mats and treat treasure hunts. He's a fun, friendly boy who enjoys catch and playing with other pups. Noone is a stranger. Foster Mama says, "Hunter is a gentle little soul with so much love to give, he deserves the warmest, most loving family." Little man is on target with house manners and sits by the door when nature calls.
We suspect Hunter does have a bit of vision impairment, Mom amd Dad will want to get him some doggy sunglasses for outdoor escapades (dog goggles to protect from UV rays and debris). Won't he look Exceptionally Adorable in them? Deaf pooches seem to have a way of connecting on the deepest level, Hunter will be such a Heart Dog. People who are home a lot and looking for a cuddle buddy or prefer to spend their time with a dog by their side will win Hunter's heart. His Forever Family has had experience with a special needs pup or researched their joys and quirks. They have considered the lifestyle and are 100% committed and ready to add a deafie to their home. They are looking for Hunter and will treasure him. His Folks will be herding/working breed knowledgeable and give Hunter social, mental, and physical enrichment. Kiddos 7 and up who understand and respect dogs are great. A fenced yard is best for this fellow, but exceptions are considered for the right "all-in" family. Another confident, socialized dog of similar temperament would be fine.
Multiresidential buildings (such as apartments) are not a good fit for this pup. The best adopters give their new family member time to decompress and grow familiar with a new environment and routine. They invest time to understand their dog and build a bond of trust and provide guidance and training. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. Hunter popped up to say, "Hiya, My Forever! I'm soooooo ready be yours. Love you already." Do you see Hunter's Heart? Is he meant to by your canine cuddle buddy? Fill out an application at the link below to be considered as a possible adopter. TOBY

Picture
This is our Toby: a 10 month old sable Border Collie mix (best guess) with impish freckles, a fluffy tail and infectious grin! The puppin is approximately 35 pounds-a compact clever & lively laddie. Toby's just a bright boy bundle of happy dog energy with an expressive way of making his opinion known. Fun on-the-run folks looking for a go-dog-go buddy will love the scampster. Toby has lots to offer-he's curious, athletic, and quick. He listens attentively to his Bestie. Toby likely came from a home that wasn't able to be provide a herder with consistent training and activity-he was kept in his crate . Foster Mom is experienced with smartypups and has spent time coaching and teaching Toby. The scampster has responded like a champ. He'll 'sit' and 'down' for yummies and is also learning-'look at me', 'wait', 'touch'. The bright boy waits until prompted to enter and exit his crate. Toby does great in it when everyone is away. He does voice his thoughts about some things-like when it's time to get out. Lol. Toby's learning to walk on leash-but he's still a puppy in training. Ahh the pooch has so much to give the Folks who put time into their fluffy family members. Toby's the lil buddy to keep up with you and take with you. He's a typical herding breed who likes to keep his brain busy and his energy focused. Running, hiking, dog sports, tricks and puzzles/games are all a possibility. Foster Mom says Toby just LOVES life and LOVES being a dog. Period. Toby's Forever family are searching for a impish little sparkplug to guide into adulthood. They'll be able to confidently direct his exuberance and give the affectionate fellow a lifetime of love. Toby has had a great time with the other doggos in the home (including a couple of smaller sized). Training and socialization are an essential part of pup parenthood. Dog-shrewd kiddos, probably 8 and up will be perfect pals for the passionate pup. A fence is best, but not necessarily necessary for the right 'let's go boy!' herding/working breed experienced person who always monitors their pup. Multiresidential buildings (such as apartments) are not a good fit for this boy. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. Toby is excited to start his new life-'Hey Forever! We are going to have the BEST life! I can't wait to share a lifetime of adventures with you! .' If you have the time to give a pup and are ready to experience all that comes with a puppy, the joys and the training, as well as the possible normal growing 'oopsies' like chewing, potty accidents, and puppy nips or nibbles, please apply with that in mind. FLUFF FLASH DASH

Picture
"Oh, just a happy, happy, happy dog!" May we introduce you to: Fluff, aka Flash, aka Bouncy Boi. The magical, flashtastic, fast, friendly, fun-loving approximately 2 year old, 60 pound, pink nosed, deaf Aussie mix boy!
There is NOTHING this full throttle, life affirming force isn't up for! Foster Dad and Foster Mom call the dynamo a HAPPY pooch!
Fluff is a zoomie "what you see is what you get" pup-up for everything, with everybody. Fluff is looking for someone to match his capital S- Spirit. Being deaf is a "by-the-way" afterthought for Happy Dog.
The smarty pooch of course, knows all the basic hand signals, but this velcro people watcher has the innate Australian Shepherd ability to know what his Person wants and eagerly awaits the next direction. Foster Mom says Fluff is a "nanny dog"- all lover, watching over the smaller ones.
Fluff hangs out with his several foster canine sibs, enjoying backyard romps and games, and puppy pool parties!
The amiable fella is treat motivated and eager to please. Fluff does draw the line at sharing his food and prefers to eat in his own space. In fact, his love of speed and feed means a slow feeder bowl is a must.
As many bright boys with a lively spirit will, he becomes a "Fluff-knows-best" bossy boi if he is not given proper direction. Fluff is looking for a confident, experienced coach to guide him.
Since Fluff is high energy and is always thinking (always absorbing), he is looking for a confident, experienced herding breed coach to manage his super smarts and exuberant energy. His Forever has had a deaf dog, or educated themselves on the joys and quirks of a dog like Fluff who hears with his heart. He needs a fenced in area to frolic (an exception may be possible for a very experienced adopter), and would love a canine friend with a similar temperament to frolic with. Fluff will do well in a home with children 8 and up who respect dogs.
Multiresidential buildings (such as apartments) are not a good fit for this boy.

TUCKER

Picture
Tether your heart to Tucker! Tucker is an Aussie/ Catahoula deafie boy about two and a half years old. Tucker also seems to be vision impaired. Nothing though keeps Tucker the heart tugger from his love to play and desire to cuddle up next to his favorite folks. He will follow his person closely and wants to be near them all the time. Tucker is the definition of 'velcro dog'. He keeps track of his human loves with his nose, heart, and human touch. He is waiting for the person or family who aren't afraid to teach Tucker what love, patience, and forever is all about. His folks are going to know that teaching and guiding Tucker will not only expand his world but theirs too. Tucker is good with children, other dogs, and cats. A fence is required in his forever home. 'Come on, I am waiting to tether my heart to yours,' Tucker says. 'I am looking for that One who has as much love to give as I do!
